"... Baumgartner's telling peels back layer after layer of emotion and depth, creating a lovely, rich, and tragic story of love and loss."  ~ BookLife Prize
Newly married, writer Jan Baumgartner and her husband, John, pack up their home and busy lives in San Francisco trading the city verve for a quieter one along the rural coast of Maine. Looking forward to a slower pace, a life intertwined with nature, and greater opportunities to satiate their wanderlust for world travel, the couple buys a rambling Victorian house on the shores of Eggemoggin Reach, excited to begin this new chapter of their lives. But just a few years later, they receive the unexpected and devastating news that her husband is terminally ill with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. In their 30s and 40s, in a place not quite yet home, without family or closest friends nearby, and facing a crippling disease that will leave him paralyzed from the neck down, the author chronicles the heartbreak and depth of their love as she struggles with the emotional and physical challenges as a full-time caregiver for her dying husband. Throughout the journey, she finds an unexpected source of inspiration in her travels to Africa, with and without John, a healing connection with the bounty of nature surrounding their coastal home, and her determination to one day return to her beloved Africa. From the rugged isolation of the Maine coast to the wilds of the African bush, Moonlight in the Desert of Left Behind is a poignant and often heartrendingly candid story of devotion, courage, and ultimately, hope.

Jan's story in moving, while deeply touching many emotions. I found myself not wanting to put it down. I cried, laughed, recalled my own journey where we had parallels as well as where we didn't. She is able to describe in her artfully written book Moonlight in the Desert of Left Behind. Jan created beautiful pictures with words, in a way that let you into a very special place. I'm recommending MDLF to all my friends, including my book club and giving it to family members who need to hear this story. This is also a book I know I'll read again and again. Thank you Jan!

Moonlight in the Desert of Left Behind A Journey of Love Terminal Illness and Hope Jan Baumgartner 9780998632001 Books Reviews

This is truly an inspirational moving book that will leave you feeling sad, motivated, happy and grateful. This true story of a strong woman who through all despair kept moving forward and gave her husband unconditional love to the end of his life. The writing is exceptional and offers everyone the opportunity to reach for the stars and live each moment to the fullest. A nourishing story of deep love and how nature can heal our souls. Moonlight in the Desert of Left Behind is a gift that you must allow yourself to receive.
Jan Baumgartner takes us on a heartfelt journey of a woman coping with losing her beloved husband to ALS. Her writing is eloquent and honest in sharing her shattered dreams, times of anger, acceptance, as well as the day to day difficulties in taking care of John, a once vibrant and healthy man. I felt right there with her on every page. Her love of nature and fascination of animals (and knowledge), especially in Maine and Africa, is intertwined throughout the book in helping her not only to survive these difficult times but push through. This is a memoir of hope, love, and determination. A gem!
I loved reading Jan Baumgärtner’s beautifully written memoir. Her love story is both touching and tragic, sad and inspirational, honest and frank. The tale is a tribute to her late husband, who passed away after battling with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease). It is also a story of survival and how Jan's travels to Africa help her move from the depths of despair to feeling hopeful once again. Moonlight in the Desert of Left Behind is poetic and poignant and will stay with you long after you have turned the last page. I recommend it to anyone who has ever loved another.
Jan takes you on a Journey of Life in a way that intertwines passionate stories of the love she shared with her husband, of his terminal illness and their love of travel. The book will make you smile, laugh, cry and wonder how one person could endure the journey. It is very sobering, but you are also lifted by the humor and the joy of the simple things in life even in the face of tragedy. The descriptions of their travels allow to feel like you are with them seeing, hearing, tasting and sharing in the adventure. It takes a very difficult subject to the day to day reality, but in a very real, respectful and gracious manner. Makes you think about your own life and what is important.
Is this a love story? Oh my yes. A story of a promised life all ahead and full is rewritten on the fly? Of two hearts basking in the arms of yeses only to be told no? Where what is planned is not the plan? Yes. All of that and more....
Jan and John... in the truest sense this is the love story. Not only about the two of them, but of each of them. How each brief moment becomes a lifetime. How denial becomes acceptance. How upstream turns downstream.
Ms. Baumgartner's book hurts and heals, holds and lets go, as she connects herself and the reader to how love, like water, always finds it way to itself.
A majestic telling of the truest love, of beauty becoming.
How the hearts yes cannot be silenced...the greatest love. Bravo.
Where do I begin...This book was, at times difficult to read, only because of the fact that I was friends with the author in high school, and it's heartbreaking to read about everything she's been through. From her life with John, who was obviously the love of her life, to his death, she was with him through all of it. I felt like I was in Africa with her, truly felt like I was experiencing everything she described with beautiful clarity, such a gift, thank you Jan. You opened your heart for all to see in this book, from San Francisco to Mexico and everything in between, you have written an incredibly beautiful love story and a story of perseverance and hope. Brava my friend, well done!
Terminal illness can be a depressing story but author Jan Baumgartner has written a memoir that embarks on a journey with her husband who is diagnosed with ALS. Their journey is one of tenderness, humor, and grace. Her memories guide you from their flat in San Francisco to a sweet Victorian in Maine, and onto travels in Africa... and I am only halfway through her book! I find myself at times during the day, with a thought about something that touched me from her book, be it a hummingbird fluttering in my own yard to a thought of contemplating an exotic trip? Stay tuned, I'll post an update when I'm finished reading!
